This week I attended a lecture held by Tina Touli, a graphic designer who runs her own design studio in London.

The fundamental idea of her talk was to address how you can generate inspiration from the physical world.

As a graphic designer she realises a lot of the process is digital and computer based. But she demonstrated how it was possible to use real life objects to create work and start off the creative process.

What was interesting about the journey she takes in designing was that she didn’t start off with a concept. She let the exploration of materials guide her to the concept and therefore making the final outcome was a mystery.

She influenced me on what she does to generate ideas. Such as collecting an archive of objects which she thinks are interesting or would create an interesting effect when applied to something. She puts these in a box which she refers to when in seek of inspiration. This is something I will start to create as it may be useful for future projects to build upon. She also takes photographs of anything that interests her slightly or videos to capture movement which could later be translated into a piece of graphics.

She also advised us to test out materials that maybe you wouldn’t link with graphic design. She demonstrated how she used gasoline in one of her projects and applied it to a piece of typography which created a unique effect in altering the text.
